Windhoek doesn't feel like most capital cities — you can cross from the jacaranda-lined streets of the centre to a hillside game reserve without ever hitting real traffic. Ride up to the Christuskirche in the morning, and by afternoon you're winding out past the Khomas Hochland hills toward Daan Viljoen, watching zebra and kudu graze below the ridgeline. Few capitals let you do both on one tank of fuel.
That's really the case for a scooter here: Windhoek is compact, hilly and calm by capital-city standards, with wide streets and short hops between the CBD landmarks and out-of-town spots like Avis Dam. Taxis are scarce and parking is a hassle downtown, so a scooter simply covers more ground, more easily, than any other option.
You'll need a valid motorcycle-category licence — Namibia follows South-African-style codes, with A1 covering smaller machines and A the larger ones, though it's worth confirming exact capacity thresholds with your rental operator. An International Driving Permit isn't legally required. Rental companies generally ask for a minimum age in the low-to-mid twenties, higher than the legal minimum of 18, and you should expect a deposit blocked on a credit card in your name.
A basic scooter runs roughly NAD 90–120 per day in low season and NAD 150–250 per day in high season, with larger or newer models going for NAD 250–400 per day.
High season runs May to October, peaking July through October, while low season stretches November to April. If you want the best mix of good weather and lower prices, aim for April–May or September–October. Book ahead if you're arriving during the dry-season peak or over the December holidays, when demand for a scooter hire in Windhoek is highest.
Namibia drives on the left, with overtaking on the right. Helmets are compulsory for both rider and passenger. Speed limits sit at 60 km/h in built-up areas and 120 km/h on tarred open roads, with gravel stretches calling for much more caution — Windhoek's surroundings mix tar and gravel, and loose surfaces plus free-roaming animals are the main hazards outside town. Drink-driving is strictly enforced with roadside checks, so treat the limit as zero. Keep your licence, passport and rental papers on you, since roadblocks on main routes are routine.
