Osh doesn't feel like a place you walk through — it feels like a place you weave through. Fire up a scooter here and Sulaiman-Too rises straight out of the traffic circle in front of you, the domes and stalls of Jayma Bazaar spill along the Ak-Buura River within a few minutes' ride, and by evening you can be tracing the river embankment with the mountain glowing pink behind you. This is the kind of city where renting a scooter in Osh turns a checklist of sights into an actual afternoon of riding between them.
The old town around the bazaar and the sacred mountain is tight and layered — narrow lanes, market stalls spilling onto the road, and nowhere sensible to park a car. A scooter slips through all of that and tucks away anywhere you stop. It also stretches your range past downtown: Papan Reservoir and the Uzgen minaret sit far enough out that walking or waiting on shared taxis wastes half your day, but they're an easy, scenic run at scooter speed. Once you've got wheels under you, scooter hire in Osh turns those half-day trips into something you just decide to do.
Rental shops generally expect riders to be at least 18, and most will hold a deposit for the duration of the rental. A motorcycle entitlement on your home licence is the safer assumption for anything above a basic small-displacement machine, and it's worth carrying an International Driving Permit (IDP) alongside it — some operators will ask for it, others won't, but it's easier to have it than not.
A standard scooter runs from roughly 450–550 KGS/day in low season up to around 900–1300 KGS/day in high season, with larger-cc or newer and electric models priced closer to 1500–2200 KGS/day.
High season runs June through September, peaking in July and August, so book ahead if you're travelling then. Low season stretches from November to March, when snow closes the high mountain passes and prices ease off — a quieter, cheaper time to explore if you don't mind cooler weather.
Kyrgyzstan drives on the right. Helmets are required for riders, speed limits sit at 60 km/h in built-up areas and 90 km/h outside them, and the tolerance for riding after drinking is effectively zero — don't. Police checkpoints are common, so keep your licence, IDP and vehicle papers within easy reach, and if you head out on mountain roads toward the Alay Valley, watch for livestock, gravel and sudden weather shifts on the higher stretches.
