Dublin doesn't give up its best side to anyone stuck on a bus timetable. Rent a scooter in Dublin and you can be tracing the cliff roads around Howth Head before lunch, then swing back along the coast to Dun Laoghaire in the afternoon — a loop that would eat half a day by public transport. Weave through Georgian streets past St Stephen's Green, then head for the water whenever the mood takes you.
The city centre is compact but choked with narrow one-way streets and traffic that stalls at every junction, and parking a car anywhere near the centre is both scarce and expensive. A scooter slips through all of that, and it also turns half-day trips out to Howth, Dalkey or Phoenix Park — slow and fiddly by bus — into an easy, direct ride, no motorway speeds required.
For a moped up to 50cc you'll need category AM, and for anything from 51cc to 125cc you'll need category A1 — both available from age 16, though most rental operators set their own minimum age at 18 or higher. Note that a standard car licence does not cover scooters or motorcycles in Ireland. An IDP isn't required. You'll also need to leave a deposit, usually held on a credit card in your name, with the amount set by the individual operator.
Average rental price is around 5-8 EUR per day during low season and 12-20 EUR per day during high season, with premium models running 20-35 EUR per day.
High season runs June to August, plus the Easter break and bank holiday weekends, when demand and prices both peak. Low season runs November to March, when many operators trim their hours, so it's worth booking ahead even for cheaper rates. If you can, aim for late May, June or September — long daylight, milder rain and smaller crowds than the height of summer.
Ireland drives on the left, so factor that in if you're used to the right. Helmets are compulsory for riders and passengers on scooters and motorcycles. Speed limits are 50 km/h in built-up areas, 80 km/h on regional roads and 100 km/h on national roads. The blood alcohol limit is 50 mg/100 ml, dropping to just 20 mg/100 ml for novice riders, and roadside breath testing is common, so it's simplest to leave the pint until you're off the scooter for the day. Keep dipped headlights on in Dublin's frequent rain and poor visibility.
