Fort's colonial arches, the salt breeze along Galle Face Green, the smell of grilled corn and prawns off the food carts at dusk — Colombo rewards travellers who can stop wherever the city surprises them. A scooter lets you do exactly that. One afternoon you might be watching the sunset crowds gather on Galle Face Green, the next weaving out to Mount Lavinia Beach for a plate of grilled seafood, no taxi negotiation required.

Colombo's best sights sit within about 15 km of each other, but they're linked by narrow, congested roads where cars and tuk-tuks crawl for long stretches. A scooter slips through that traffic and parks wherever a car can't, which makes it the natural way to string together Fort, Beira Lake and the temples around it in a single easy loop — and it opens up longer runs down the coast or north toward Negombo that would otherwise mean haggling over taxi fares.

Top 10 things to see in Colombo by scooter

  1. Galle Face Green — Colombo's seaside promenade, an easy first ride with street food stalls and sunset views over the Indian Ocean.
  2. Gangaramaya Temple — one of the city's most important Buddhist temples, packed with eclectic art and architecture, a short hop from Beira Lake.
  3. Independence Square (Independence Memorial Hall) — an open colonnaded monument set in a park, popular for an evening loop on two wheels.
  4. Viharamahadevi Park — Colombo's largest park, next to the National Museum, a good shaded stop in the city center.
  5. Colombo National Museum — Sri Lanka's largest museum, easy to combine with a park and temple loop downtown.
  6. Dutch Hospital Shopping Precinct — a 17th-century Dutch colonial building turned dining and shopping quarter in Fort, a natural place to park and wander.
  7. Old Colombo Lighthouse (Colombo Fort Lighthouse) — a landmark in the Fort district and a good waypoint on a harbor-area ride.
  8. Mount Lavinia Beach — a classic short run south of the city, about 12 km, for a beach break and seafood lunch.
  9. Kelaniya Raja Maha Vihara — a major pilgrimage temple on the Kelani River, reached by a scenic ride northeast out of the city.
  10. Negombo Beach and Fish Market — a popular longer ride north toward the airport road, known for its lagoon and lively morning fish market.

What do you need to rent a scooter in Colombo?

You'll need a motorcycle entitlement on your home licence, recognised locally through the Department of Motor Traffic or the Automobile Association of Ceylon — an International Driving Permit on its own is not enough, so bring both. Riders are typically expected to be at least 18, though many rental shops set their own, higher minimum. Expect to leave a deposit, usually in cash or as a card pre-authorisation; if a shop asks to hold your passport, a photocopy plus a cash deposit is the safer route.

How much does it cost to rent a scooter in Colombo?

A basic 100–125cc scooter runs around 1,700–2,200 LKR per day in low season, rising to roughly 3,000–4,500 LKR per day in high season. Larger or newer automatics push past 5,000–7,000 LKR per day.

  • Prices climb from December through March, when the west and south coasts see the most visitors.
  • They ease off from May to September, during the quieter southwest monsoon months.

When to book a rental scooter in Colombo?

December to March is high season on the west and south coasts, so book a few days ahead if you're arriving then. May to September is low season, with fewer tourists and softer prices — a good window if you'd rather ride without booking far in advance. October and November sit in between, as an unsettled inter-monsoon period island-wide.

Local traffic rules in Colombo

Sri Lanka drives on the left. Helmets are compulsory for both rider and passenger, and this is actively enforced by police. Speed limits sit around 50 km/h in built-up areas and 70 km/h outside them; scooters aren't allowed on the expressway network, so any longer trip stays on the regular A- and B-roads. Treat drink-driving as a strict zero — enforcement is serious, and it's simply not worth the risk. Keep your home licence, IDP and local recognition permit on you, since checkpoints are routine, and it's best to avoid riding after dark given the patchy street lighting outside the city center.

If you wish to rent a scooter without a deposit and with zero risk, you will need to add full insurance to your reservation.
