Scooters are a popular choice for visitors who want something faster than a bicycle but more approachable than a motorcycle. They let you move smoothly through traffic, park easily, and enjoy more ground in less time. Chicago’s streets, from bustling downtown to quieter neighborhoods, are perfect for two-wheel exploration.
Required documents may vary depending on the rental company, but common rules are as follows:
You can rent a 50cc scooter with a regular car (B) or AM license.
For scooters up to 125cc, a car license or A1/A2 moto license is required.
For scooters above 125cc, a full A-class motorcycle license is needed.
Some companies may request an International Driving Permit (IDP) and a refundable deposit.
Scooters follow the same traffic rules as motorcycles:
Helmets are mandatory for both driver and passenger;
No riding on sidewalks or pedestrian areas;
Lane splitting is not recommended in Chicago;
Lights must be used at night;
Respect all speed limits, especially downtown.
Scooters are provided in good condition and must be returned with a full fuel tank. Helmets are usually included, while other gear like gloves or jackets may be optional. Traditionally, you return the scooter to the same location. Some rental providers, however, allow flexibility—delivery to hotels or drop-off in different areas for convenience.
Scooters combine agility with comfort. They’re perfect for exploring downtown, zipping to the lakefront, or even riding short distances between neighborhoods. Parking is easier than with cars, and they offer a relaxed pace for sightseeing.
