Tagbilaran is where most travellers first touch down on Bohol, and it's a shame to let it be nothing more than a port. Pick up a quad bike here and the island opens up fast — you can be threading past the Blood Compact Shrine within minutes, then pointed north toward the Tarsier Sanctuary in Corella or east across the causeway to Panglao's beaches by lunchtime. It's the kind of freedom a jeepney timetable will never give you.
Tagbilaran's own streets are narrow and share space with jeepneys and tricycles that don't always leave much room to negotiate, so a quad's stability and clear sightlines make it an easier way to learn the local traffic rhythm than a scooter would. It also shrugs off the potholed, half-paved stretches heading inland toward the Chocolate Hills and along Panglao's beach roads — terrain where a smaller bike starts to struggle. With the city, the hill country and Panglao's coast all 30–60km round trips apart, having something sturdier under you beats walking or hopping between tricycles all day.
Quad bikes here are usually rented as guided tours on private land or trails rather than for public roads, so shops don't typically ask for a driving licence. The legal driving age in the Philippines is 18, though individual operators often set their own minimum, and an IDP isn't required for this kind of rental. Expect to leave a deposit — commonly your passport held as security, though a cash deposit or photocopy is sometimes negotiable instead.
Average rental price is around 900 PHP per day in low season, rising to 1,500–2,000 PHP per day in high season. Larger or newer 4-seater and higher-cc models run 2,500–3,500 PHP per day.
December to February is the sweet spot — dry, cool and easy riding, though it overlaps with high season pricing, so book ahead. If you'd rather pay less and don't mind the odd rain shower, June to October brings softer rates, just keep an eye on typhoon forecasts toward the back end of that window.
Traffic keeps to the right in the Philippines. Helmets are compulsory for both rider and passenger on any motorcycle or scooter, and speed limits generally run up to 80 km/h on open country roads, dropping to 30 km/h in city streets and just 20 km/h near schools and blind corners. The blood-alcohol limit is 0.05%, so it's best to skip the San Miguel until the ride is done for the day.
