Johannesburg won't strike you as an obvious base for a quad-biking trip — it's a sprawling metro built around highways, not trails. But drive half an hour past the suburbs and the Highveld opens up: grassland, koppies and dirt tracks around the Cradle of Humankind, or the steep switchbacks of the Magaliesberg. That's where a rented quad earns its keep, carrying you over farm roads and river crossings a sedan would never attempt, past the same landscapes early hominids once walked.
The city itself is too congested and too spread out for two wheels or two feet to make sense as a way to see it. But its edges are a different story. Within an hour of Sandton or Rosebank you're on open Highveld terrain with rocky ridges, riverbeds and farm tracks that a road vehicle can't handle and a guided 4x4 tour only shows you at someone else's pace. A quad puts you in control of the route, the speed and the stops — which is exactly what this terrain rewards.
For public roads, a quad needs to be registered and the rider licensed; guided trail rides on private land generally don't require a licence at all, though this varies by operator. You'll typically need to be 21 or over, and a deposit is normally held on a credit card in your name. If your home licence isn't in English or doesn't carry a photo, bring an International Driving Permit — many operators ask for one regardless.
Expect around ZAR 280–320 per day in low season, rising to roughly ZAR 550–750 for a standard quad in high season. Larger or newer models run about ZAR 900–1,200 per day.
High season runs December through January, plus the Easter period, when coastal and inland demand both spike and prices sit at their yearly peak. Low season is May to August — South Africa's winter — with cooler, drier weather and the best rates. If you want ideal riding conditions without winter chill or peak-season pricing, aim for March to May or September to November, and book a few weeks ahead if you're travelling during school holidays.
South Africa drives on the left, so overtake on the right. Helmets are compulsory for every rider, no exceptions. Speed limits are 60 km/h in urban areas, 100 km/h on rural roads and 120 km/h on freeways unless signs say otherwise. The blood alcohol limit is 0.05 g/100 ml, and roadblocks are common, so don't ride after drinking. On public roads you'll also encounter the local "yellow lane" habit, where slower traffic edges onto the shoulder to let faster vehicles pass — useful to know, but best avoided on a quad given the pedestrians and stopped vehicles that also share that space.
On our website you can rent the following types of quad bikes: sport ATV, utility quad, two-seater quad, automatic quad, manual-shift quad, 4x4 quad, buggy (UTV), off-road racing quad, kids' quad, and larger touring ATVs.

Usually basic third-party insurance is included in the rental price. If you wish to rent a quad bike without a deposit and with zero risk, you will need to add full insurance to your reservation.
When you make an online quad bike reservation you can also order the following extra services and equipment: helmet, goggles, gloves, individual guide or instructor, photo and video service of your ride, transfer to the starting point of your ride, full insurance, delivery to the address you choose.
Most of our local quad bike rentals have many years of experience and will provide you with a well-maintained quad, helmet, guide and friendly service.
