Singapore rewards anyone willing to get off the MRT. Slip onto a motorcycle and the city opens up in a way the subway maps never show you — the palm-lined seafront road at East Coast Park with hawker stalls just off the shoulder, or the sunset climb up to the rooftop deck at Marina Barrage for a skyline view most visitors never bother to chase down. You cover the CBD, the northern nature reserves and the eastern coast all in one easy afternoon, at your own pace, stopping wherever looks interesting.
The island is compact but the traffic isn't kind to it: parking is expensive, cars queue at every junction, and the grid between districts is dense and unforgiving on foot. A motorcycle slips through that congestion, skips the parking search, and turns a 40km end-to-end run into something you can do before lunch. Distances here are short enough that a small-to-mid displacement bike is really all you need — there's no reason to haul around a touring machine on an island this size.
You'll need a valid motorcycle licence from your home country — Singapore doesn't require an International Driving Permit for this. Most rental outlets set their own minimum age, usually 18 and up, and will ask for your passport alongside your licence. Expect to leave a deposit, with the amount depending on the operator and the bike you choose. Bear in mind that rental outlets offering walk-up tourist hire are relatively few in Singapore, so it's worth booking ahead rather than turning up and hoping.
A scooter or small underbone runs SGD 30-40 per day in low season and SGD 45-60 per day in high season. Bigger sport or touring motorcycles (400cc and up) cost more, from SGD 90-150+ per day, and come with extra licensing and insurance restrictions for visitors.
Singapore doesn't really have a rainy-season lull the way many destinations do — it's warm and humid all year, so demand tracks events and holidays rather than weather. Book ahead for September and December, when the Grand Prix and year-end travel push both demand and prices up. If you can travel in May-June or October instead, you'll find better rates and more availability. February to April tends to bring the driest, most settled riding conditions if the weather itself is a factor for you.
Traffic keeps to the left. Helmets are compulsory for riders and pillion passengers alike, and headlights should stay on while riding. Speed limits sit at 50 km/h in built-up areas and 70-90 km/h on expressways, signed individually along each stretch. The drink-driving limit is strictly enforced at 0.08% blood alcohol, so don't take chances there. Many roads and expressways also charge Electronic Road Pricing at peak times, with a reduced rate for motorcycles fitted with the in-vehicle unit — your rental operator can usually sort this out for you.
