Limerick rewards two wheels the moment you cross the Shannon. Park a motorcycle steps from King John's Castle on King's Island, then be out on the R478 within twenty minutes, tracing the Clare coast toward the Cliffs of Moher with nothing between you and the Atlantic view. It's the kind of ride that turns a single afternoon into the highlight of a trip.

The city itself is small enough that a bike slips through traffic and finds parking where a car never could, but the real case for renting here is what surrounds it. The Shannon Estuary, the Clare coast and the backroads of County Limerick are made for riding rather than driving — narrow, twisting, and often prettier than the destination at the end of them. A motorcycle also opens up day trips that would otherwise mean booking a car, for a fraction of the cost.

Top 10 things to see in Limerick by motorcycle

  1. King John's Castle — the Norman castle on King's Island riverbank is the natural starting point for any ride around the city.
  2. Cliffs of Moher — about an hour north into Co. Clare, with the coastal run along the R478/R459 a classic biker route in its own right.
  3. Bunratty Castle and Folk Park — a short hop up the N18 toward Shannon, easy enough for an afternoon loop.
  4. Adare village — twenty minutes southwest on the N21, thatched cottages and a good excuse for a coffee stop.
  5. Lough Gur — a prehistoric lakeside site south of the city on the R512, and a favourite twisty backroad among local riders.
  6. Curragh Chase Forest Park — forest loop roads and a lake near Kildimo for a relaxed countryside run.
  7. Loop Head Peninsula — a longer day out through West Clare to a dramatic lighthouse headland, quieter than the Cliffs of Moher.
  8. Kilmallock — a medieval town south on the R512/R518, worth folding into a County Limerick loop.
  9. Foynes Flying Boat Museum — west along the scenic N69 Shannon Estuary road, with aviation history waiting at the end.
  10. Glin Castle — further along the N69, a natural extension for a full coastal-road day out.

What do you need to rent a motorcycle in Limerick?

The licence you need depends on the bike: category A1 covers scooters and motorcycles up to 125cc from age 16, A2 covers restricted-power machines from 18, and full category A opens everything from 24 (or earlier with progressive access). A car licence alone does not let you ride a motorcycle in Ireland — there's no CBT-style workaround here. Most operators also set their own minimum age, typically 18 and up, and will place a deposit hold on your credit card. An International Driving Permit isn't required, but it's worth carrying if your licence isn't in English.

How much does it cost to rent a motorcycle in Limerick?

Expect around 25-35 EUR per day in low season, rising to 45-65 EUR per day in high season, with premium and larger-displacement models running 70-100+ EUR per day.

  • Prices climb from June to August, Limerick's busiest riding months.
  • November to February is when you'll find the cheapest rates and the most flexible availability.

When to book a rental motorcycle in Limerick?

High season runs June through August, plus Easter and bank holiday weekends, when demand — and prices — peak and booking ahead really matters. Low season stretches from November to March, when rates drop but some rural operators cut back their hours. If you want the best of both worlds, aim for late May, June or September: long daylight, milder rain and fewer crowds on the coast roads.

Local traffic rules in Limerick

Ireland drives on the left, and helmets are compulsory for both rider and passenger on any moped or motorcycle. Speed limits are signed in km/h: 50 km/h in built-up areas, 80 km/h on regional roads, 100 km/h on national roads and 120 km/h on motorways, with many rural local roads now capped at 60 km/h. The blood alcohol limit is 50 mg/100ml, tightening to 20 mg/100ml for novice riders in their first two years. Keep dipped headlights on in rain or mist — common on the Clare coast — and watch for narrow, hedge-lined boreens, blind bends and the occasional stray sheep on the upland roads.
