Taipei rewards anyone willing to leave the metro behind. Follow the river north and you will end up at Tamsui Fisherman's Wharf, watching the sun drop behind Lover's Bridge; head south instead and Bitan's suspension bridge hangs over a lake ringed by hills, quiet enough to forget you're still in a city of two and a half million. A bike rental in Taipei turns these into a single afternoon instead of two separate trips.
The reason it works so well here is the network of riverside paths tracing the Tamsui, Xindian and Keelung rivers — flat, largely separated from traffic, and threaded directly through the sights that matter. Distances between them run 5 to 15 kilometres, an easy pedal but a slog on foot, and central Taipei's scooter-heavy streets are far less inviting for casual riding than the dedicated paths running alongside them. That's what makes a bicycle rental in Taipei the more relaxed way to link old districts with green space.
Nothing complicated. Ordinary bicycles and pedal-assist e-bikes need no licence at all, and there's no minimum age set by law — renters are welcome regardless of driving experience. Shops typically ask for a deposit, either cash or a card hold, and may want to photocopy an ID; agree the amount and return terms before you pay. No International Driving Permit is required for a bicycle.
A basic city bike runs around NT$100–150/day in low season and NT$150–250/day in high season. E-bikes and road or touring bikes cost more, roughly NT$400–800/day.
If you want the best conditions and don't mind paying a bit more, aim for October or November, or March and April — mild, dry, and outside the typhoon season. Booking a few days ahead is enough outside peak weeks, but during Lunar New Year or the autumn high season, reserve earlier since demand for a bicycle rental in Taipei rises fast.
Taiwan drives on the right, and while helmets aren't legally required for adult cyclists, wearing one is a sensible habit given the city's scooter traffic. Riverside paths are separated from road traffic, so the usual road speed limits and drink-driving rules mostly matter if you're crossing streets between path sections — alcohol limits are strict, and cycling under the influence is penalised too. Stick to the marked bike paths where they exist, and you'll rarely need to share a lane with a scooter at all.
