San Rafael rewards anyone willing to cover a little ground. Pedal out past the vineyards on the edge of town and within an hour you can be tracing the walls of the Cañón del Atuel, red rock rising on either side of the road as it follows a chain of turquoise reservoirs. Stop at Los Reyunos for a swim in water so clear it looks tropical, or keep it shorter and turn back at Valle Grande dam if you're short on time. Either way, this is a ride that earns its own photographs.
The town itself is flat, compact and easy to navigate on two wheels, which makes a bicycle rental in San Rafael the natural way to get around. The real draw, though, is what sits just outside it: wineries a few kilometers from the plaza, river parks close enough for an afternoon loop, and the start of the canyon road within reach of an ordinary rider. None of it is walkable, all of it is close enough to bike, and traffic on the rural routes stays light.
Bicycles are the simplest vehicle to rent anywhere in Argentina: no licence, no registration and no minimum age set by law. Rental shops in San Rafael set their own rules, and most will just ask for an ID document and a small deposit before handing over the bike — no IDP needed.
Average rental prices run around 4,500–6,500 ARS per day in low season and 8,000–12,000 ARS per day in high season, with premium or electric-assist models closer to 13,000–18,000 ARS per day.
High season runs December through February, with a smaller peak in July school holidays — book a few days ahead if you're arriving then. Low season stretches from May to August, when demand and prices both ease off and you can often reserve a bike the same day you want to ride. If you want to hire a bicycle in San Rafael for the canyon road specifically, aim for spring or autumn, when temperatures are mild and the wind hasn't picked up yet.
Argentina drives on the right, and national law requires a helmet for cyclists, even though enforcement of this rule is inconsistent in practice — it's still worth wearing one, especially out on the canyon road where cars pass at speed. Urban streets carry a default limit of around 40 km/h, so riding through town is unhurried. The stricter habit to adopt is around alcohol: several Argentine provinces run zero-tolerance policies for anyone on a vehicle, so the safest rule for a day of riding is simply not to drink beforehand.
