Picture a slow morning loop around Parque Metropolitano La Sabana, the lake glinting through the trees, before you pedal downtown past the coffee stalls of Mercado Central and finish with a craft beer in Barrio Escalante. That's a full day of San José on two wheels, and it barely dents your legs. If you want to skip the buses and rideshare queues, you can rent a bicycle in San José on our website and set your own pace through the city.
San José's centre is compact and mostly flat, a grid only three or four kilometres wide, which makes a bicycle faster than waiting for a taxi through downtown traffic and nimbler than a bus on the narrow one-way streets around Barrio Amón. A bicycle rental in San José also lets you push a bit further out to the university district in San Pedro without needing a car or a transfer.
Good news: no licence is required to rent or ride a bicycle in Costa Rica, at any age. Costa Rican law does require a helmet, plus reflective gear if you're riding at night, so make sure your rental comes with one. Deposits are usually modest for bicycles compared with motorised vehicles, typically a hold on a credit card in the main renter's name, and no international driving permit is needed.
Expect to pay around 1,500–2,000 CRC per day in low season, rising to 3,500–6,000 CRC per day in high season, with premium models running 7,000–10,000 CRC per day.
High season runs December to April, the dry "verano" months, with the tightest availability and highest prices around Christmas, New Year and Easter week. Low season stretches May to November, with the heaviest rain in September and October — showers tend to arrive in the afternoon rather than all day, so a morning ride still works well and comes with lower rates. Book a few days ahead in high season; low season is far more relaxed.
Costa Rica drives on the right. Helmets are legally required for cyclists, along with reflective gear after dark. Built-up areas generally carry speed limits of 40–60 km/h, so traffic moves at a manageable pace for sharing the road on a bicycle. Drink-driving laws are strict and strictly enforced, so treat riding after any alcohol as off-limits, and keep your passport or a copy of it on hand in case of a routine police check.
