Phnom Penh reveals itself best at wheel level. Glide along Sisowath Quay as the light softens over the Tonle Sap, freewheel past the gilded roofs of the Royal Palace, then climb the short hill to Wat Phnom, the very temple that gave the city its name. A bicycle turns these landmarks from separate errands into one unhurried loop, with time to stop for iced coffee wherever the street looks interesting.
Few cities suit a bike better. Phnom Penh is flat and compact, and most of its riverside and central sights sit within five to ten kilometres of each other — close enough to link on two wheels, far enough that walking gets old fast. Renting a bicycle in Phnom Penh also skips the daily haggling over tuk-tuk fares and keeps you clear of the city's more chaotic motorbike traffic, while still leaving the door open for longer half-day rides out to the countryside.
Nothing complicated. Bicycles in Cambodia require no licence, no registration and no set minimum age — shops rent them freely, usually asking only for a photocopy of your passport or a small cash deposit. There's no need for an International Driving Permit either. If you'd rather not hand over your original passport, ask to leave a copy or a cash deposit instead, and get the terms in writing.
A standard city or hybrid bicycle runs roughly 10,000–14,000 KHR per day in low season, rising to about 16,000–24,000 KHR per day when tourist demand peaks. Mountain bikes and electric bikes, better suited to a Koh Dach or Choeung Ek run, typically cost 30,000–50,000+ KHR per day.
November to February is peak season: cool, dry weather, the best riding conditions of the year, and the highest demand and prices — book a few days ahead if you're arriving around the New Year. June to September is low season, with softer rates and far fewer bikes booked out, though afternoon monsoon downpours are common. March to May stays dry but turns punishingly hot, so plan rides for early morning or late afternoon if you're cycling then.
Cambodia drives on the right, so keep to that side and pass on the left. Helmets are legally required for motorised two-wheelers and strongly worth wearing on a bicycle too, given how mixed the traffic can be. Speed limits sit around 40 km/h in built-up areas, though enforcement is patchy and road conditions are the real limiting factor. The legal blood-alcohol limit is 0.05%, with roadside checks common in the evenings — best to skip alcohol entirely before you ride. Larger vehicles effectively have the right of way in practice, so stay alert at intersections and give trucks, buses and SUVs plenty of room.
