New York City rewards anyone willing to cover ground, and a bicycle is the fastest way to do it. Loop the six flat, car-free miles of Central Park at your own pace, then keep going south along the Hudson River Greenway, with the skyline on one side and the water on the other all the way down to The Battery, where the Statue of Liberty sits out in the harbor. Cross into Brooklyn on the bike lane of the Brooklyn Bridge and you've covered more of the city in an afternoon than most visitors see in three days on the subway.
New York is flat, threaded with protected greenways and park loops, and its main sights are strung along a long, narrow island where switching subway lines burns time you don't have. A bike turns that stop-and-go underground shuffle into one continuous ride, and it sidesteps the one-way grid and traffic that make driving here more trouble than it's worth. Distances that are too far to walk — Central Park to Coney Island, Manhattan out to Governors Island — are easy on two wheels.
No licence is required to rent a standard bicycle at any age. If you'd rather cover ground faster, e-bikes are widely available; the quicker Class 3 models (up to 28 mph) usually come with a minimum age of 16 and a helmet requirement. No international driving permit is needed for a bicycle. Rental shops typically ask for ID and a credit card, and hold a deposit for the duration of the rental — amounts vary by shop and by bike.
Prices swing a lot with the season. Expect USD 5-15 per day in low season, and USD 25-45 per day in high season; a premium road bike or e-bike runs USD 60-90 per day.
High season runs May through September, when the greenways, park loops and boardwalks are busiest and prices climb accordingly. Low season runs November through March, with the calmest rides and the lowest rates found in December through February. If you're after mild weather and thinner crowds without the summer prices, April to June and September to October are the sweet spot — book a little ahead for those shoulder months, since good bikes go quickly once the weather turns.
Traffic drives on the right. New York State does not require helmets for adult cyclists, though it's sensible to wear one regardless, and helmets are mandatory for riders under 14. Stick to the greenways and marked bike lanes where you can — city streets carry speed limits of around 25 mph, and traffic can be heavy and fast-moving on avenues. One local quirk worth knowing even though it applies to cars, not bikes: right turns on red are banned by default in New York City, unlike most of the country. If you're combining your trip with any alcohol, note the citywide open-container laws and keep riding sober — the greenways are far more enjoyable with a clear head anyway.
