Dhaka moves at the pace of its rickshaws and buses, which means a bicycle is the one vehicle that can actually keep up with you. Pedal through the narrow lanes of Old Dhaka toward Lalbagh Fort, wind down to the Buriganga riverbank at Sadarghat where wooden launches jostle for space, or take a quieter loop around Dhanmondi Lake in the early morning while the city is still waking up. This is how you get past the traffic jams and into the parts of Dhaka most visitors only see from a car window.

Cars and rickshaws crawl through Dhaka's congestion, but a bike slips through gaps they can't, and it's the only way to reach some of Old Dhaka's tightest lanes at all. The city also has a handful of genuinely rideable green spaces — Ramna Park, Dhanmondi Lake, the Hatirjheel circuit — where cycling stops being a workaround for traffic and becomes an actual pleasure. If you want to rent a bike in Dhaka, these pockets of calm are exactly where a bicycle earns its keep.

Top 10 things to see in Dhaka by bike

  1. Lalbagh Fort — an unfinished 17th-century Mughal fort complex in Old Dhaka, a short ride from the river and a natural starting point for an old-town loop.
  2. Ahsan Manzil (Pink Palace) — a riverside former nawab's palace on the Buriganga, easy to pair with a ride down to Sadarghat.
  3. Sadarghat river terminal / Buriganga riverfront — Dhaka's chaotic, colourful launch terminal and riverbank, one of the most photographed scenes in Old Dhaka.
  4. Star Mosque (Tara Masjid) — a small, mosaic-tiled mosque tucked into the Old Dhaka lanes, worth the slow pedal through narrow streets to find it.
  5. Curzon Hall, Dhaka University — a red-brick colonial-era building on a quiet, tree-lined campus stretch that's a relief from the traffic outside.
  6. Shaheed Minar — the national language-movement monument near the university, easy to fold into the same campus ride.
  7. Ramna Park — a central green space with a lake loop, good for an easy, shaded morning ride away from traffic.
  8. Jatiyo Sangsad Bhaban (National Parliament House) — Louis Kahn's landmark building surrounded by open lawns and water, one of the few places in Dhaka with real riding space.
  9. Dhanmondi Lake — a paved lakeside path popular with local cyclists and joggers, a rare stretch of car-free riding.
  10. Hatirjheel Lake circuit — an elevated expressway and lake loop with a cycle-friendly stretch, good for an evening ride with skyline views.

What do you need to rent a bike in Dhaka?

Good news: no licence, no registration, no minimum age. Renting a bicycle in Dhaka is as simple as it sounds — you won't need an International Driving Permit or any paperwork that a scooter or motorcycle would require. Some shops may still ask for a small deposit or a copy of your ID before handing over the bike, so keep that on hand just in case.

How much does it cost to rent a bike in Dhaka?

A basic city bike runs roughly 350–450 BDT per day in low season, rising to around 500–700 BDT per day as demand picks up. If you'd rather have a geared mountain or hybrid bike, expect 800–1,500 BDT per day.

  • Prices climb from November to February, when cool, dry weather brings the most riders out.
  • They drop from June to September, during the monsoon, when heavy rain keeps demand — and prices — low.

When to book a rental bike in Dhaka?

November to February is Dhaka's high season and by far the most comfortable time to ride: dry, cool days and clear skies, though also the priciest window, so booking a little ahead helps. June to September is low season, with monsoon rain and flooded roads cutting both demand and prices — ridable in dry spells, but pack accordingly. March is a good in-between month if you want easier weather without full high-season rates.

Local traffic rules in Dhaka

Bangladesh drives on the left, and Dhaka's streets rarely follow a strict lane discipline — rickshaws, CNG auto-rickshaws and buses merge without much warning, so stay alert rather than assuming right of way. Helmets aren't a legal requirement for cyclists the way they are for scooter and motorcycle riders, but wearing one is still a smart habit in this traffic. Bicycles aren't bound by the posted vehicle speed limits, but riding at a careful pace among faster traffic is the safer approach. And needless to say, alcohol and riding don't mix here — Bangladesh's laws around drinking are strict, so save it for after you've parked the bike.
