Belfast rewards anyone willing to explore it on two wheels. Ride the flat harbourside path through Titanic Quarter, then push out along the Lagan Towpath as it slips away from the traffic and into the quiet green run of the Lagan Valley. A bike gets you from the shipyards to the university district and up the slopes of Cave Hill in the same afternoon — something buses simply can't match, and walking would eat your whole day.
What makes Belfast such a natural fit for a bike is its scale. Almost every landmark worth seeing sits within three to five kilometres of the centre, so you're never far from the next stop, yet the terrain still throws in enough variety to keep it interesting. The Lagan Towpath gives you a traffic-free route straight out of town, while the climbs toward Stormont and Belfast Castle are steep but short enough to feel like an achievement rather than a chore.
Nothing complicated. Bicycles in the UK need no licence, no registration and no minimum age, so anyone can hop on and ride. Most rental shops will still ask for a form of ID and a card for a security deposit, but there's no IDP or driving qualification to worry about — this is the simplest vehicle on our website to arrange.
Expect to pay around GBP 10–13 per day for a basic city bike during the quieter winter months, rising to GBP 18–25 per day for a standard hybrid or city bike in peak summer. If you'd rather cover ground with less effort, e-bikes and higher-spec touring or hybrid models run GBP 30–40 per day.
July and August are Belfast's high season, driven by summer tourism and the events calendar, so book ahead if you're travelling then. December to February is low season, with fewer visitors and lower prices, though cold, wet weather limits how much riding you'll want to do. For the best balance, aim for May, June or September — long daylight hours, milder weather and noticeably less traffic than the summer peak.
Traffic drives on the left, so keep to the left-hand side of the road and give way to traffic from your right at roundabouts. Helmets aren't a legal requirement for cyclists in the UK, though we'd always recommend wearing one. Built-up areas carry a default 30 mph speed limit, with 20 mph zones increasingly common in busier parts of the city. If you're riding after dark, UK law requires front and rear lights plus a rear reflector, and cycling on pavements isn't permitted. As for alcohol, the safest approach on any ride is simply not to drink beforehand.
