Philipsburg has a way of pulling you toward the water — but the real adventure starts once you leave the boardwalk behind. Rent a motorcycle and you can be watching jets skim the sand at Maho Beach within fifteen minutes, then cross over to the French side for lunch by Orient Beach before the afternoon heat sets in. Two wheels turn this island into something you actually explore, not just visit.
Sint Maarten packs Dutch and French territory into just 34 square miles of winding hill roads and tight coastal streets, which is exactly where a motorcycle earns its keep. Parking near the beaches is limited and pricey for cars, border crossings between the Dutch and French sides are informal and frequent, and the climbs up toward Pic Paradis reward something nimble. A motorcycle rental in Philipsburg puts both capitals, half a dozen beaches and a mountain viewpoint within a twenty- to thirty-minute ride of each other.
Requirements follow Dutch licence categories. For scooters and mopeds, category AM covers you, with a minimum age of 16. Motorcycles are graded by power: category A1 from age 18, A2 from 20, and full unrestricted category A from 24 (or earlier through progressive access from A2). An international driving permit isn't legally required. Expect to leave a deposit — usually a card pre-authorisation — along with your passport, and note that rental companies often set their own higher minimum ages on top of the legal ones.
Average rental price runs EUR 25-30 per day in low season, rising to EUR 35-45 in high season, with premium models reaching EUR 45-60 per day.
High season runs roughly December through April, when the island fills up and prices climb toward that EUR 45 per day mark — book a few weeks ahead if you're arriving then. Low season, September to November, brings quieter roads and prices as low as EUR 25 per day, with far less pressure to reserve early.
Traffic keeps to the right. Helmets are compulsory for anyone riding a motorcycle, moped or scooter. Speed limits follow Dutch standards: 50 km/h in built-up areas, 80 km/h outside them, and up to 100 km/h on the few stretches where it's signposted, though Philipsburg's roads are mostly slower and hillier in practice. Motorcycles and mopeds must run with dipped headlights at all times, day and night. The blood alcohol limit is 0.5 g/l, dropping to 0.2 g/l for riders on a novice licence.
