Picture crossing an island so small you can outrun the tide around it, stopping wherever a waterfall or a hidden cove pulls you off the road. That's Siquijor on two wheels: one morning at the rope swing above Cambugahay Falls, the next hour tracing sand roads out to Paliton Beach for sunset. A scooter turns the island's scattered highlights into one loose, unhurried loop instead of a checklist you tick off from a tour van.

Siquijor's coastal ring road runs about 72km and is mostly paved and gentle, with almost no real traffic to fight. The catch is that its best stops — waterfalls, a spring-fed pool under a centuries-old balete tree, the hilltop views of Mt. Bandilaan — sit inland, off routes that tricycles and habal-habal drivers rarely cover on a fixed schedule. Renting a scooter lets you dip inland whenever a sign or a viewpoint catches your eye, then rejoin the coast without waiting on anyone.

Top 10 things to see in Siquijor by scooter

  1. Cambugahay Falls — a three-tier turquoise cascade near Lazi with a rope swing over the pool, the island's most photographed stop and an easy detour off the coastal road.
  2. Paliton Beach — a quiet, powder-white cove in San Juan backed by dune forest, best reached for sunset.
  3. Salagdoong Beach — a resort beach in Maria with two concrete cliff-diving platforms, 5m and 10m, plus a calmer cove for swimming.
  4. Old Balete Tree — a centuries-old balete on the San Juan–Lazi border where you park up, wade into a spring-fed pool under the roots, and get a free fish spa from resident tilapia.
  5. St. Isidro Labrador Church & Convent, Lazi — a coral-stone Spanish-era church beside the largest, oldest convent in the Philippines, worth the ride inland.
  6. Cantabon Cave — a limestone cave system near Cantabon with an underground stream, stalactites and bats, a short guided scramble off the ring road.
  7. Capilay Spring Park — a public spring-fed pool right in Larena town, a handy cool-off while circling the island.
  8. Tubod Marine Sanctuary — a shore-accessible reef in San Juan with an underwater Sto. Niño statue; snorkel gear rents right at the site, no boat needed.
  9. Guiwanon Spring Park — a mangrove boardwalk over tidal creeks in Barangay Banban, shaded and good for birdlife between beach stops.
  10. Mt. Bandilaan Nature Park — the island's high point on the Lazi–San Juan border, with a hillside cross, a butterfly sanctuary and the best panoramic view over Siquijor's interior.

What do you need to rent a scooter in Siquijor?

You'll need a driving licence with a motorcycle entitlement — a car-only licence doesn't cover even a small automatic scooter. Foreign licences in English are valid for up to 90 days from arrival, so no IDP is required within that window as long as you can show your passport or entry stamp. The legal driving age is 18, though some shops set a higher minimum. Expect to leave a deposit, usually your passport held as security; a cash deposit or photocopy is often negotiable instead.

How much does it cost to rent a scooter in Siquijor?

Local walk-up shops charge roughly 350–500 PHP per day for a standard automatic scooter in low season, rising to about 500–700 PHP in high season. Bigger automatics like the Yamaha NMAX or Honda ADV160 run closer to 700–900 PHP a day. Booking through BikesBooking.com bundles delivery, insurance and English-language support, so our own scooter rental in Siquijor listings start around €25/day in low season and scale up to roughly €30–35/day in high season.

  • Rates climb around December–January and Holy Week, when demand peaks.
  • They soften from June through September, the quieter rainy-season months.
  • Larger, newer models always cost more than a basic automatic.

When to book a rental scooter in Siquijor?

High season runs December to February, with an extra spike around Holy Week in March or April — book ahead if you're arriving then, since prices and availability tighten. Low season runs June through September; it brings a real chance of rain and the odd typhoon warning, but also the cheapest days to rent a scooter in Siquijor and thinner crowds at the falls and beaches. If your dates are flexible, aim just outside the December–February rush for a good balance of dry weather and calmer pricing.

Local traffic rules in Siquijor

The Philippines drives on the right. Helmets are mandatory for both rider and passenger, and should carry an ICC/PS safety mark. Speed limits scale with the road: around 30 km/h on municipal streets, dropping to 20 km/h near schools and blind corners, and up to 80 km/h on open country stretches — Siquijor's ring road mostly sits toward the lower end given its towns and curves. The blood-alcohol limit is 0.05%, so it's best to treat riding and drinking as separate activities entirely. Handheld phone use while riding is also prohibited, even at a stop.
