Picture parking right on the harbor at Olhão's twin market halls, helmet in hand, with a ferry to a barrier-island beach waiting a few minutes' walk away. That's the appeal of a Scooter, Motorcycle, Quad Bike ATV, and Bicycle Rental in Olhão, Portugal: the town's fishing-port character, the Ria Formosa lagoon at its doorstep, and coastal neighbours like Fuseta and Tavira within easy reach all reward getting around on two or four wheels rather than on foot.
Olhão's old town, the Bairro do Levante, is a tangle of narrow one-way lanes where a car quickly becomes a burden — you'll spend more time hunting for a parking spot than admiring the whitewashed, cube-shaped houses. Meanwhile, the town's real highlights sit just outside it: the Ria Formosa's barrier islands, reached by ferry docks a short ride from the centre, and coastal towns like Fuseta, Tavira, and Faro, all 10 to 40 minutes away along flat, easy roads. Whether you rent a scooter in Olhão or opt for a bicycle or quad, you can park by the market or the pier and cover that whole stretch of coast in a single day.
For a scooter up to 50cc, a category AM licence is enough, and a full car (B) licence covers that too. Anyone riding a 125cc scooter needs an A1 motorcycle entitlement — the rule that lets Portuguese B-licence holders ride 125cc on their car licence only applies to residents, not visitors. Rental companies set their own minimum age, usually above the legal minimum of 16, and non-EU/EEA visitors should bring an International Driving Permit alongside their home licence. Expect to leave a deposit, normally held on a credit card, with the amount depending on the vehicle and operator.
Prices swing a lot with the season. In low season you can find a basic scooter or bicycle from EUR 5 per day, while July and August push scooters up to EUR 15-30 per day, bicycles to EUR 8-15, and motorcycles or quad bikes/ATVs to EUR 40-70. Larger-cc motorcycles and multi-seat quads can reach EUR 60-120 per day at the peak.
High season runs from June to September, peaking in July and August, when prices climb and popular vehicles can sell out — booking ahead pays off here. Low season, November to March, brings the cheapest rates of the year, though it's worth noting the wider Algarve stays mild and rideable through most of it. If you'd rather skip both the crowds and the coldest weeks, April to June and September to October offer warm, dry days with far less competition for bikes.
Portugal drives on the right. Helmets are compulsory for riders and passengers on every scooter, moped, motorcycle, and road-registered quad; cyclists only need one if they're under 16. Speed limits are 50 km/h in town, 90 km/h on open roads, and up to 120 km/h on motorways, though mopeds are capped at 45 km/h and can't use motorways at all. The blood alcohol limit is 0.5 g/l, dropping to 0.2 g/l for newer drivers, and roadside checks are routine — so plan accordingly if you're out for the evening.
