Port Blair rewards anyone willing to get behind handlebars rather than wait for a bus that may not come. Pick up a scooter and the day opens up: a sunrise dip at Corbyn's Cove Beach minutes from town, then a run south through forest canopy to Chidiya Tapu, where the road simply ends at a sunset viewpoint over the Andaman Sea. Between those two rides sits a whole island of quieter corners — paddy fields, harbour views, jungle switchbacks — that no tour bus bothers to stop for.
The island's sights are scattered 5 to 25 km apart along winding, hilly coastal roads, and buses run too rarely to string them into a single day. A scooter fixes that instantly. Town traffic is light by Indian standards and the tarmac is in decent shape, so a gearless scooter stays easy even if you've never ridden one before, while still being nimble enough for the narrower stretches climbing toward Mount Harriet or threading out to Chidiya Tapu.
You'll need your home motorcycle or scooter licence plus an International Driving Permit. Rental shops in the tourist area often check loosely, but carrying both keeps you covered. Most operators set a minimum age of 18. Expect to leave a deposit in cash or as a card hold — some shops will ask for your passport instead, but you're not obliged to hand it over; offering a cash deposit or a photocopy works just as well.
A standard gearless scooter, like a Honda Activa, runs 450–600 INR per day in low season and 700–1000 INR per day in high season. Step up to a geared bike or a larger-cc scooter, such as an Activa 125 or a Royal Enfield, and you're looking at 1000–1500 INR per day.
High season runs November through February, with December and early January the busiest and priciest stretch — book a few days ahead if you're arriving then. Low season falls between June and September, when the monsoon keeps prices down but also brings heavier rain, so build some flexibility into your route.
India drives on the left, so keep to that side and overtake on the right. Helmets are compulsory for both rider and passenger, and your scooter's headlight stays on automatically in daylight — that's normal, not a sign something's wrong. The blood alcohol limit is effectively zero at 0.03%, so don't ride after drinking. Stick to posted speed limits rather than assuming a set number, and take it easy after dark, since livestock and unlit vehicles are common on quieter roads.
