Bonaire is small enough that a scooter turns the whole island into your own loop road. One morning you can be watching windsurfers skim across the shallow turquoise water at Lac Bay, and by afternoon parked beside the pink-tinted Pekelmeer Salt Flats, wind in your hair the entire way. This is what makes scooter rental in Bonaire such an easy call for visitors: the island rewards slow, curious travel, and a scooter lets you set the pace yourself instead of waiting on a tour bus.
At roughly 24 kilometres end to end, with light traffic and mostly flat, gently rolling roads, Bonaire is close to ideal scooter territory. Most of the sights below sit only 15 to 40 minutes apart, so you spend your day exploring rather than driving. A scooter is also cheaper and far more flexible than a car when you want to reach the quieter south-coast salt pans or duck up a dirt track in the north — though if you're heading into the rougher, sandier stretches inside the national park, a step-through moped handles the terrain more comfortably than a manual scooter.
Bonaire follows Dutch licensing rules, so you'll need a category AM licence, which is already included in most car or motorcycle licences, and you must be at least 16 years old. An International Driving Permit isn't required, but bringing your home licence and a passport for ID is standard. Rental companies will usually ask for a deposit, most often taken as a card pre-authorisation rather than cash.
Expect to pay around USD 18-25 per day in low season, rising to roughly USD 28-40 per day in high season. Larger or automatic models can run USD 35-50 per day. If you want to rent a scooter in Bonaire at the best rate, book ahead for the busier months and compare listings on our website before you land.
High season runs mid-December through April, when the island fills up and prices sit at their highest — book a couple of weeks ahead if you're travelling then. September through November is low season, with fewer visitors and the cheapest daily rates, so it's a smart window if your dates are flexible. Either way, availability tends to tighten fastest around the holidays, so don't leave your moped rental in Bonaire to the last minute if you're arriving over Christmas or New Year.
As part of the Netherlands, Bonaire drives on the right. Helmets are mandatory for all scooter and moped riders, no exceptions. Speed limits stay low and relaxed island-wide, generally 50 km/h in built-up areas and somewhat higher on the open road outside town, so there's no need to rush. The blood alcohol limit is 0.5 g/l, so keep drinks for after you've parked. Ride during daylight when you can, use headlights at all other times, and you'll find getting around Bonaire by scooter refreshingly easy.
