Picture swapping the humid crawl of a Nouméa taxi queue for the wind off the lagoon as you cut along the coast road. Rent a scooter in Nouméa and the city opens up on your own schedule: a swim at Baie des Citrons before breakfast, a coffee stop at Port Moselle market, then a climb up to the old gun batteries at Ouen Toro before the afternoon heat sets in. It's the kind of place where the best views are a short ride away, not a bus transfer.
Nouméa is small, hilly and easy to read on two wheels — the peninsula layout means most of what you want to see sits within twenty minutes of downtown, and traffic is light enough that a first-time rider settles in fast. A scooter also gets you to the spots a rental car struggles to park near and a bus simply doesn't reach, like the switchback climb to Parc Fôret Cachée or the ridge road over Col de la Pirogue.
New Caledonia follows French rules. For a 50cc scooter you need an AM category licence — anyone with a full car licence already qualifies. For a 125cc scooter you'll need an A1 motorcycle licence, or a car licence held for at least two years plus a short training course. Rental agencies in Nouméa usually ask riders to be 18 or older regardless, and if your licence isn't French or EU, bring an International Driving Permit alongside it. Expect a card pre-authorisation as a deposit, refunded when the scooter comes back undamaged.
Low season rates run from roughly 600 to 1,800 XPF a day, climbing to about 2,400–4,200 XPF a day in high season, with larger or newer models reaching 4,200–6,000 XPF a day.
If you're travelling in July or August, book ahead — that's when demand and prices both peak. Aim for February, March or November instead if you want lighter crowds and the lower end of the daily rate, and you'll still get warm, ridable weather.
Driving follows the French system: keep to the right. Helmets are compulsory for every rider and passenger on a scooter, and gloves are a legal requirement too, so pack a pair or ask about them when you book. Speed limits sit at 50 km/h in town, rising outside the built-up area, so read the signs as you leave the centre. The blood-alcohol limit is 0.5 g/l, so it's best to treat any riding day as a no-drinking day. Ready to see Nouméa at your own pace? Use the search form at the top of the page to book your scooter, and have a nice trip!
