Montserrat doesn't look like anywhere else in the Caribbean, and the best way to take it in is on two wheels. Pick up a scooter and you can wind along the coastal-hill road from the green, still-inhabited north down toward Jack Boy Hill, where the whole ash-buried Belham Valley opens up below you, then carry on to Rendezvous Bay for the island's one stretch of white sand. Along the way you'll pass roadside stops like Runaway Ghaut, where locals will tell you a sip of the stream water guarantees you'll come back one day.
The island is barely 16 km long, with a single loop road linking the towns, beaches and viewpoints, so a scooter can cover everything worth seeing in a day without you ever needing a car. Traffic is close to nonexistent outside Little Bay, and the roads themselves are steep, narrow and switchback through old volcanic ground — exactly the terrain where a light, nimble scooter beats a car, especially when you want to stop every few minutes at another overlook onto the Soufrière Hills exclusion zone.
As a UK overseas territory, Montserrat follows UK-style licensing. For a scooter up to 50cc you technically only need to be 16 with a provisional licence and CBT, but rental operators here generally ask for a full driving licence and a minimum age around 18-21. No International Driving Permit is required if your licence is in English. Expect to leave a card deposit, held until you return the scooter undamaged.
Rates are usually quoted in GBP. A basic scooter runs from GBP 4-6 per day in low season up to GBP 10-16 per day in high season, and a larger or newer model can reach GBP 18-25 per day.
High season runs December to April, when dry weather and the busiest Caribbean tourist traffic push prices up — book ahead if you're travelling then. From June to November, hurricane-season low season, roads are quieter and scooters cheaper, though you should watch the forecast and keep plans flexible.
As across the UK's territories, you drive on the left, overtaking on the right. Helmets are compulsory by law for both rider and passenger on any scooter or motorcycle. Speed limits are modest and posted in mph, generally 30 mph in built-up areas, so on Montserrat's narrow volcanic roads you'll rarely want to go faster anyway. The drink-drive limit is strict, and the safest approach — especially on hairpin coastal roads — is not to drink at all before riding.
