Stanley isn't a city you rush through — it's one you potter around, and a scooter is the perfect way to do it. Pick one up and you can be at the whale-jawbone arch outside Christ Church Cathedral in minutes, then carry on along the harbour to watch Magellanic penguins waddle around their burrows at Gypsy Cove. Ride a little further and the wide, empty sand of Yorke Bay is yours, often with nobody else on it at all.

Stanley is small, flat, and almost free of traffic, so a scooter genuinely is the fastest way to see it. You can loop the harbourfront, climb up to a viewpoint, and reach the coastal fringe in a single easy outing, covering in an afternoon what would take a full day on foot. Just past this fringe, roads turn to gravel and track, so a scooter keeps you comfortably within the paved, rideable heart of town and its shoreline — ideal for a compact, unhurried trip rather than a long-distance ride.

Top 10 things to see in Stanley by scooter

  1. Gypsy Cove — a short ride from town to a sandy cove with Magellanic penguin burrows and coastal views.
  2. Cape Pembroke Lighthouse — the easternmost point of the islands, a scenic ride past the airport to wide Atlantic views.
  3. Yorke Bay — a wide, empty beach next to Gypsy Cove, a popular short seaside stop just outside Stanley.
  4. Christ Church Cathedral and the Whalebone Arch — Stanley's landmark whale-jawbone arch and cathedral, a natural start or end point for any ride.
  5. Falkland Islands Museum and National Trust — a waterfront museum at the Historic Dockyard, an easy central stop for local and 1982 conflict history.
  6. 1982 Liberation Memorial — a waterfront memorial on Ross Road, a quick stop along the harbourfront ride through town.
  7. Government House — the Governor's residence and gardens, a landmark on the western edge of town worth a slow pass.
  8. Surf Bay — a quiet beach near Gypsy Cove, reachable on the same coastal loop.
  9. Stanley Harbour waterfront (Ross Road) — a flat harbourside road past historic wrecked ship hulks, with views over the water and easy cruising.
  10. Sapper Hill — a hilltop just south of Stanley with panoramic views over town and harbour, a short climb from the centre.

What do you need to rent a scooter in Stanley?

For a scooter up to 50cc you need to be at least 16 with a provisional licence and CBT (Compulsory Basic Training) completed, and you'll ride with L-plates and no passenger. Anything bigger than 50cc counts as a motorcycle and needs a full motorcycle entitlement. In practice, most rental operators set their own minimum age and experience requirements above the legal floor, so check with them directly. An International Driving Permit isn't required here. You'll also need to leave a deposit, usually held on a credit card in your name, with the amount depending on the vehicle.

How much does it cost to rent a scooter in Stanley?

Expect to pay around GBP 4–6 per day in low season, and roughly GBP 10–15 per day in high season. A larger or newer scooter runs closer to GBP 15–20 per day.

  • Prices climb from December to February, when cruise ships and the summer tourist season bring the most visitors.
  • They drop from June to August, the quiet austral winter with the least tourist traffic.

When to book a rental scooter in Stanley?

If you're travelling in the December–February window, book ahead — this is when cruise calls and summer visitors push demand up alongside prices. Come in June, July or August and you'll find both quieter streets and the cheapest daily rates, though you can generally book closer to your travel dates in this off-peak stretch.

Local traffic rules in Stanley

Drive on the left and give way to traffic from your right at roundabouts. Helmets are compulsory by law for riders and passengers on scooters and motorcycles. Built-up areas default to a 30 mph (48 km/h) speed limit, so there's no need to rush around town. The blood alcohol limit is 0.08%, but the simplest approach is not to drink at all before you ride. Riding with dipped headlights on at all times is standard practice and well worth following for visibility.
